Festive Left Friday Blogging: Gotta hand it to Venezuela…

And Chavecito certainly does. He was in the Caracas barrio of Petare today, handing out land titles to community organizations so that poor folks have more autonomy over their own homes:

And of course, he was proudly wearing the flag as he did so. He’s got plenty to be proud of. Today also marks the fifth anniversary of Venezuela being declared free of illiteracy by the UN. It’s still going strong, with no regressions. They did it with the help of Cuba. Can your capitalism do that?

That outfit works in all occasions.
Whether you’re meeting your arch-rival, doing real estate, or hyping up a crowd…
I thank him & Fidel for rehabilitating the track suit.
Americans almost destroyed it with the Sopranos & RunDMC.

  2. Heh…I just accidentally dumped a comment by a complete moron telling me Venezuela was not a developed country, and that the capitalist world DOES have full literacy (which it most certainly does NOT).
    Sometimes, mistakes are good.

  3. Sophomore says:

Can you name me a fully developed, capitalist country that is not fully literate?
    Thought not.

  4. Well, oh aptly-named Wise Ass (that’s what “sophomore” means in Greek, look it up), don’t go answering your own question on my behalf, because your “answer” is WRONG. Actually, I can name you the United States, Canada, and all of developed capitalist Europe. ALL of them have illiterates, of both adult and school age.
And no, you can’t blame it on immigration, unless you mean that of white people. There have ALWAYS been illiterates in all developed countries. But some of them have apparently stopped keeping statistics, very unwisely. And now they’re beset with problems of kids not reading at their grade level, and adults who can’t spell or comprehend. The Internet is full of the latter.
And if you don’t believe me, call your local literacy hotline. They’ll tell you that yes, functional illiterates exist in your own town. Maybe you are one of them. You certainly do seem to have a comprehension problem.

    Ooooohhhh!
You can wear it to funerals too!
(Fair’s fair. The family of William Lara has been authorized to dance on my grave.)
