Music for a Sunday: João Gilberto, RIP

In memory of the great bossanovista, who left us yesterday at age 88:

There are so many of his compositions I could have picked, but this one pretty much sums up his musical philosophy. The female singer is his first wife, Astrud Weinert; João himself comes in on the second verse. The lyrics he sings translate as follows:

“A little corner, a guitar,
This love, a song,
To make happy those who love each other…
Plenty of calm to think,
Plenty of time to dream,
And from the window a view of Corcovado,
the Redeemer, oh how lovely!
I want my life to be like this always,
With you right here beside me,
Until the old flame goes out…
And I who was sad,
Disgruntled with this world,
When I met you, I came to know
What is happiness, my love.”

Obrigada, João.
