Fear doesn't travel well; just as it can warp judgment, its absence can diminish memory's truth. What terrifies one generation is likely to bring only a puzzled smile to the next. --Arthur Miller, "Why I Wrote 'The Crucible'", The New Yorker, October 21, 1996

Yes, this upsets me, too. It’s a serious mistake on Correa’s part, although the root of the problem lies elsewhere. Latin America is still very priest-ridden in a lot of respects, and this is one of those. Meanwhile, ironically, their abortion rates are higher than in countries where the procedure is legal and readily available. And use of birth control is happening in spite of the church…although not common enough to be without shame, or always easily available — and therefore, higher abortion rates. This was a major blind spot for Chavecito, too…he thought abortion was due to a “lack of love”, when it was nothing of the sort…it’s more like a lack of money to feed all those extra mouths! It would benefit these leaders to realize that socialism also means women need to be self-determining when it comes to reproduction. Otherwise, they fall into the same old capitalist error of having an excessively large labor pool, which drives down wages and fills the land with slums, and makes nonsense of their efforts to socialize their countries. Abortion should be fully legal on demand at any stage of pregnancy; women can decide these things just fine for themselves. The only role the state needs to play in this is to guarantee that they can abort safely, and that it won’t cost anything out of pocket.
The interview with Maria Galindo (http://upsidedownworld.org/main/bolivia-archives-31/3549–bolivian-radical-feminist-maria-galindo-on-evo-morales-sex-ed-and-rebellion-in-the-universe-of-women-) indicates that the same situation exists in Bolivia–a safe abortion in a clinic is easy to come by but only if you have about $400. Otherwise you take your chances with very unsafe methods.
So, in other words, it’s safe abortion for the rich, illegality for the poor. Just like in the US!
