Donnie poses for selfies with alleged massage parlor madam

Be it known that I say “alleged” only for legal reasons here. My mind is pretty made up as to what sort of person this woman is already:

I mean, a gold, rhinestone-encrusted MAGA clutch purse? That is one tacky-ass hoochie mama right there.

And of course, she allegedly sold the business to someone else before it became a brothel:

Yang says she had long since sold Orchids of Asia Day Spa, the massage parlor where authorities say they caught Kraft on camera paying for oral sex the morning of the Jan. 20 AFC Championship game — his second visit in 24 hours. (Kraft has denied breaking the law.) Yang, who goes by Cindy, was not charged in the multi-agency anti-human-trafficking operation last month that shut down 10 Asian day spas in Florida, none of which are registered to her or her family.

Allegedly.

(Cough.)

Anyhow, the fact that these misodge parlors (see what I did there?) likely engaged in trafficking to fill demand for their services should tell you a few things. First off, that there aren’t many women — in North America OR Asia — who voluntarily engage in prostitution, least of all because they just loooooove sex sooooooo muuuuuuuch. Bummer? Apparently not for the guys who go there. They don’t give a shit whether the women even like what they’re doing. They don’t even care if the women are adequately paid, housed, or fed. Or if they have freedom of movement (which implies freedom of choice).

“It was clear that multiple women were working and living inside the spas. They were cooking on the back steps of the business,” Snyder said. “They were sleeping in the massage parlor on the massage tables.”

They had no access to transportation and were moved from location to location, Snyder said.

Just let that marinate in your cerebrospinal fluids for a moment there…

…and now, consider how lucrative this operation was for their traffickers:

Snyder said this isn’t a case in which a woman is captured and kept against her will and locked up or kept at gunpoint.

“What you see instead are women that come here ostensibly to be maids or to work in restaurants, they bring their children,” Snyder said, noting they then end up in this situation.

Snyder said the men were the “monsters in this equation.”

Asked whether celebrities or prominent people could be involved, Snyder said, “There will be a newsmaker in this one.”

Sndyer said much of this starts in New York.

He said he anticipates additional women or managers will be arrested.

“We followed as much as $20 million moving in and out of China,” he said.

And that was just from one known ring. There are bound to be others.

BTW, did you catch the bit about a “newsmaker in this one”? Robert Fucking Kraft is certainly one, but another might just be his good friend, Donnie Fucking Drumpf…who, as we know from above, posed for selfies with the woman who claims to have nothing to do with this shady business. We know already that Donnie himself is hardly innocent when it comes to matters of prostitution; he is friends with Jeffrey Epstein, a well-known exploiter of under-age girls. It not only makes sense that he would be friends with a wealthy john who frequents skeevy massage parlors; it’s something we should frankly expect of him.

And if this woman with the blinged-out MAGA bag eventually turns out to be the actual madam of this particular operation, and has been using others to front for her, should we even bat an eye? No…because we already expect ugly things of Donnie and his associates.

Even uglier still (but entirely fittingly, given the milieu), this particular business relies heavily for its profits on racist stereotypes about Asian women:

“Economics are a huge contributor to how Asian women are victimized and also how they are deceived and coerced into exploitative situations,” said Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, author of Hidden in Plain Sight: America’s Slaves of the New Millennium and an expert witness in criminal and civil court cases related to human trafficking. “With that being said, Asian women are highly sought after because they are perceived by American men as being more submissive. In my interviews with commercial sex consumers, and through research into the forums where many of them post about these Asian massage parlors, they talk about their dislike of American women, who they perceive as more opinionated and more recalcitrant to their sexual and social demands.”

[…]

Trafficking experts say racial and sexual stereotypes of Asian women have origins in military sex tourism. Asian women sexually served US troops during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

This became the primary source of stereotypes framing Asian women as “fragile, docile, but sexually available,” said Katharine Moon, a political science professor and Wasserman Chair of Asian Studies at Wellesley College. “Those three wars shaped the sexual imagination of American men.”

After Japan surrendered during World War II, the country set up a brothel system for American GIs, which American authorities allowed to operate despite reports women were being forced into prostitution, a 2007 Associated Press review of historical documents found. During the Korean War, the US military frequently used South Korean prostitutes. Last year, a South Korean court ruled the government had illegally detained prostitutes who serviced American troops in the 1960s and ’70s and forced them to undergo treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.

In a 2008 paper, White Sexual Imperialsm: A Theory of Asian Feminist Jurisprudence, Sunny Woan wrote that “white sexual imperialism, through rape and war, created the hyper-sexualized stereotype of the Asian woman. This stereotype in turn fostered the overprevalence of Asian women in pornography, the mail-order bride phenomenon, the Asian fetish syndrome, and worst of all, sexual violence against Asian women.”

Be it also remembered that the “Orchids of Asia” saw little, if any, of the money they made for those who exploited this ugly “submissive” stereotype of them. And who shipped that money Bog knows where.

Having translated stories from the German press for this blog, about how traffickers operate there (out of perfectly legal brothels, even), I’m under no illusion that coerced “sex work” is any kind of exception. Globally, in fact, it’s the norm; few women would voluntarily sell sex for a living if they could make just as much money or more at something less physically and emotionally invasive, as men do (and take for granted that they can and will). The fact that there are so few straight men in prostitution (as anything other than pimps, traffickers and johns, anyhow) should tell you something about the gender disparities at work, too.

This is hardly a “victimless crime”, as it is so often ballyhooed to be. The women of these “spas” are being forced to work round-the-clock, which means they have to eat, sleep and live where they work, and the quality of life on the premises is poor. How many men would they have to service per day in order to rack up some 1500 each per year? I wouldn’t be surprised if they had been exposed to a shitload of STDs, with no access to medical treatment — and if, as in the German “wellness” brothels, they made their pimps more money per customer if they did it without condoms (which is illegal in Germany now, but still very commonplace).

The loud-and-proud “sex workers” who dominate the discourse around prostitution in the US are actually the 1%ers of sex capitalism. They are lucky and privileged, and they may well have no idea how much so they are. They are the ones who minimize and pooh-pooh all the trafficking that goes on under their very noses. In so doing, they actually aid and abet the traffickers by sweeping the ugly truth under the rug. If it hasn’t happened to them, so their reasoning goes, it ain’t happening much, if at all. It’s a pernicious lie, and an insidious one.

And if that kind of talk doesn’t remind you of the partisans of a certain political party, which talks a great game about “family values” while living a grimy nonstop Caligulan orgy, then you might just want to check your own privilege there, my friend.

Chelsea Manning jailed again. Happy Women’s Day.

And as Jeff Waldorf points out, this sets a disturbing precedent in an age of media demonization:

…because if they can go after a whistleblower and a site that publishes leaked CIA cables and the Collateral Murder video, what’s to stop them from going after anyone and everyone who doesn’t kiss Dictator Donnie’s squashy ass?

Greg Palast exposes media lies about Venezuela (again!)

Is the current Venezuela situation a case of déjà vu all over again? Damn right it is. And if it all sounds woefully familiar, that’s because you’ve heard it all before. As early as 2002, in fact. And here’s a guy who was following the story back then, who saw it go down the first time, pointing out the parallels this time:

Our man Greg Palast, in the house…and incidentally demonstrating (for all you idiot incels out there) how to REALLY wear a fedora. (You’ll note that he’s not wearing an anime t-shirt or a Hawaiian print shirt and cargo shorts, but a proper suit.)

Here’s Greg again, calling in to Thom Hartmann’s show, and not holding back:

And yup, it’s all about the oil this time, too.

BTW, Jimmy isn’t just hosting one great expositor on Venezuela, but a whole slew of ’em:

Max Blumenthal, showing how far from starving the Venezuelan oppos actually are. And how crooked the mainstream Democrats, like Donna Shalala (shame on her) for supporting the coup.

Could the 1918 flu pandemic make a comeback?

Don’t look now, but it’s quite possible, if this bug escapes the lab…or the permafrost:

And if you want to know why that particular flu is so terrifying, here’s a documentary about its human impact, from people who survived:

And here is the opener to another PBS documentary, one that traces the epidemic’s origins — not to Spain, where it was initially thought to have arisen, but to Kansas, of all places:

Soldiers at a training camp in Fort Riley burned heaps of manure from a nearby farm, without any sanitary precautions — because who knew that deadly viruses could lurk in such places? Certainly not the US Army. But soon they realized that something was amiss, because young healthy men fell ill with influenza and died. And others, not sick yet, carried the virus with them to Europe, where the war was raging.

Spain was not embroiled in the war, and its press therefore not subject to wartime censorship; thus, outbreaks of the illness were freely reported there before they made headlines elsewhere. Hence the (erroneous) name.

At first people believed that the pandemic crossed over from Europe to the Americas, but now we know that it was most likely the other way around. The xenophobic belief that the “genetically inferior”, olive-skinned Spaniards were to blame, with their backwardness and poor hygiene, was utterly wrong. What was known in some parts as “the Spanish Lady” was actually a disease made in the good ol’ US of A…and it was the ignorance and neglect of white people, not those of other colors, that wound up costing so many millions of lives around the world.

And that could do so again, if the lessons of the past are not learned…and if the virus should ever escape laboratory confinement again.

Music for a Sunday: Hands off Venezuela!

Dame Pa’ Matala reunited to keep their country from being divided by the gringos, the pitiyankis, and the local fascists. And last week, they showed up at a concert near the Colombian border, where the bottom-feeders were trying to bring in “aid” for a putsch. That effort blew up in the putschists’ faces (along with their fake “aid caravan”), but know what hit the mark? Yup…THIS.

Viva Venezuela Bolivariana, carajo.

Sebastian Gorka: Large lump of lard fears commie hamburgers!

Yes, folks, you heard it straight from the pursed lips of Wile E. Pickle himself:

Suuuuuuper genius.

Meanwhile, as Jeff points out, mass-produced hamburgers were actually pioneered by…brace yourselves…ol’ Joe Stalin himself:

While the Soviet Union was indeed opposed to the vulgar excesses of materialistic US consumer-capitalism during the Cold War, Mr Gorka linking Ms Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow “blue wave” idealists to the Russian dictator’s reign of terror is as obvious a piece of scaremongering as it is hysterical and disingenuous.

He is also incorrect in singling out the humble hamburger as an emblem of Bolshevik disapproval. At one time, the regime positively envied the all-American lunch option and considered it a model meal: simple, affordable and nutritious.

Anastas Mikoyan, a long-serving Minister of Foreign Trade, visited the US on a diplomatic mission in 1936 where he observed the American economic system at close quarters, studying its food industry, meeting with auto tycoon Henry Ford and visiting Macy’s department store in New York City with a view to improving efficiency at home.

Mikoyan – recently portrayed on screen by Paul Whitehouse in Armando Ianucci’s satire The Death of Stalin (2017) – had already introduced canning to modernise Soviet food plants, his efforts hailed (or satirised, depending on your point-of-view) in Boris Pilnyak’s socialist-realist novel Meat (1936), a Soviet answer to The Jungle (1907) by Upton Sinclair.

He returned from his trip with a number of souvenirs of American goods he felt had virtue and should be introduced at home. His haul included ice cream, corn flakes, popcorn, tomato juice and hamburgers.

“You, Anastas, care more about ice cream, than about communism,” Stalin joked when Mikoyan encouraged the manufacture of the dessert in the USSR.

The food commissar would commission The Book of Tasty and Healthy Food in 1939, a state cookbook intended to encourage homecooking and quell interest in restaurant dining and its associated service culture. It was read by one-sixth of the world’s population at the time.

His interest in the mechanisation and mass production of a Russian equivalent to the American hamburger was halted by the Second World War and instead the “Mikoyan cutlet” emerged, a cheaper burger patty (“kotleti” in Russian) intended for the common man that was popular for many years after. The Kremlin, of course, preferred gourmet sausages.

The New York Times wrote about the dish in a profile of Mikoyan, “the man who introduced Eskimo Pie to the Soviet Union”, in November 1964: “The ‘Mikoyan cutlet’ – nobody knows whether it is pork or beef or perhaps fish or fowl – is still the cheapest, most popular if not most revered piece of meat a few kopecks can buy.”

So there you have it, folks. Stalin not only came for their hamburgers, he left the US’s burgers alone…and put them into production back in Russia, too.

But if anyone could stand to lose a few hamberders, it’s Wile E. Pickle, who is rather a large lump and has plenty of beef to spare on his portly frame.

What we’ve learned from the Cohen hearings (so far)

I feel like doing a roundup today, so here we go. First off, we learn that Cohen was a take-the-money-and-run kind of guy:

Yeah, that’s right: Novartis PAID him to influence Donnie, but he just took their money for (apparently) nothing.

We also learned that Mark Meadows is a stinking racist, that his biracial nevvies have a racist for an uncle, and Rashida “Impeach That Motherfucker” Tlaib is a total badass for calling him out:

(Extra props to Mikey Cohen for actually sassing back at him that he, as a relative of Holocaust survivors, ALSO worked for a racist.)

And in addition, we learned that the Internet never forgets a racist’s past, no matter how many black women he trots out to prove how totally-not-racist he is:

Yeah, Birthers, that’s right, you’re gonna get called on your shit A LOT from now on. DEAL WITH IT.

And we also learned just how savvy a politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is, even though she’s an absolute beginner:

She’s kicking ass and taking names, daring (and caring) to ask the questions that the paid-off bottom-feeders like Mark Meadows have been ignoring for YEARS. And what’s more, she’s drawing on her own experience as a resident of the Bronx as the basis for her questioning. DAMN, this woman is GOOD. She’s doing it very efficiently, and opening up space for the hearings that will no doubt lead to Donnie’s impeachment. And she even had time to spare…notice how she said she would yield the rest of her time to the chairman?

And oh yeah, there was also this:

Surprise! Donnie was a crappy student, and willing to spend a lot of money (and threats) to cover it up.

I wonder what else he’s hiding from us…

Michael Cohen buries Donnie

You wanna see damning testimony? I got yer damning testimony riiiiiight here:

Yes, that’s right…Donnie DID meet with all those Russkies he claims never to have met with. And all in the hopes of building a “tower” in Moscow that never actually materialized. How about that! He’s been lying to us all this time. And more to the point: He violated the emoluments clause, which is grounds for impeachment.

Also, Donnie DID pay off Stormy Daniels to hush her up during the 2016 election campaign. And Diaper Don is on the hook, too, because his squiggle is on those cheques:

Gonna be so satisfying when both these thugs get frog-marched off to the Big House in shackles and orange coveralls. Which should match Donnie’s Cheeto-dust face and hair to perfection.

Cenk Uygur prediction comes true!

And hey howdy, it only took six years for pretty much everything Cenk predicted to come true, and then some:

And yes, I am kink-shaming, because this is fucking perverted.

“He began to hit me when we engaged in sexual activities,” wrote one plaintiff, a New York woman, in a sworn affidavit filed with her lawsuit. “He would have me on my knees and begin to beat me with his hands on my breasts,” she wrote, “occasionally saying, ‘I own you,’ or ‘You are my slave.’”

The malpractice lawsuits, two of them filed on Thursday in Essex Superior Court and a third filed last year, paint a picture of a therapist who encouraged women to trust and rely on him, then coaxed them into humiliating sexual activities, often during treatment sessions for which they were charged. When the New York woman had trouble paying her therapy bills, she said, Ablow advised her to work as an escort or stripper because the work was lucrative.

[…]

In all three cases, the women say they relocated from other states, at Ablow’s request, to be closer to his Newburyport office where he used a controversial treatment for depression: infusions of Ketamine. The drug, an anesthetic that can induce a trance-like state and memory loss, is sometimes abused but is also used by some clinicians to treat chronic depression.

Andrea Celenza, a Lexington psychoanalyst who interviewed the women and reviewed their medical records as an expert witness hired by the plaintiffs, said in a letter filed with the lawsuits that Ablow’s behavior in the case of the New York woman “was sadomasochistic, anti-therapeutic, and constitutes a perverse use of his status and power.” The former patient said that, during their seven-year sexual relationship, Ablow persuaded her to get his initials tattooed on her arm.

Another expert said that Ablow appeared to be using Ketamine in conjunction with talk therapy to gain control over a third patient, a woman from Ohio.

“The patient appears to have become very dependent on this medication and dependent on Dr. Ablow to supply it,” wrote Jeffrey Lieberman, chairman of the psychiatry department at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, in expert testimony filed with the lawsuits.

I am shocked, SHOCKED to hear that a quack I have wanklisted so many times for the ugly things he has said about women, LGBT people, etc. turns out to be a bona fide pervert.

And that, as Cenk said, he pretty much literally had somebody tied up in his basement. Or two somebodies. Or three. Hell, it even makes sense from a strictly metaphorical angle, because having someone hooked on ketamine is indeed a kind of mental bondage, and this not-so-good doctor’s creepy mind is indeed a basement. An oubliette, if you will:

The patient from Ohio said she came with her mother to see Ablow in early 2015, when she was 25, receiving Ketamine infusions from him. When she returned home, she said, Ablow encouraged her to e-mail him or text him daily.

“I had never had a therapist or any professional take such an interest in me,” the woman said in her signed affidavit, adding that Ablow told her to send him even her most trivial thoughts. “At some point, it became normalized and frankly necessary for me to communicate with Dr. Ablow several times a day.”

During therapy sessions conducted over Skype, the Ohio woman said, Ablow would compliment her on her appearance and tell her he missed her. Soon, he raised the topic of sexual preferences and asked his patient whether she preferred to be submissive or dominant.

The woman said the conversation made her uncomfortable. Still, in March of 2015 she traveled to Newburyport again, this time alone.

“I asked Dr. Ablow why he had such a terrifyingly strong effect on me and he told me it was nothing to be afraid of,” the woman said. “It was then that my sexual encounters with Dr. Ablow began.”

The Ohio woman said Ablow soon persuaded her to move to Newburyport. As a further inducement, he allegedly offered discounts for the Ketamine infusions and promised to arrange job interviews.

“He told me he could convince anyone of anything,” she said.

The Ohio woman said Ablow would have her undress and perform oral sex, although he was careful to stop her before climaxing.

“Much later, when I confronted him about this, he informed me that he had a lot to lose and did not want to leave evidence,” the Ohio woman said. The Ohio woman said Ablow asked her to get a tattoo with his initials, but, unlike the New York patient, she declined.

The woman also said Ablow would sometimes beat her as she kneeled.

“Sometimes he would use his hands and other times he would take off the belt he was wearing and use that to strike me,” the woman said. “This belt had a metal buckle with a skull on it.”

Ugh. Fortunately, this one eventually started seeing another therapist — a REAL one — and freed herself from him and his perversions. But he still haunts her nightmares, and those of others too:

The Ohio woman said she still fears Ablow and is plagued by nightmares in which he chases her with a gun, because he discussed guns with her during their therapy sessions.

The former employees said Ablow could be threatening, displaying his handgun or making subtle hints that he would retaliate if they provided anyone with unfavorable information about his practice. Dixon, who said she had a manipulative sexual relationship with Ablow off-and-on for years, said he once pointed his gun directly at her. During sex, Dixon said, Ablow could be so rough that “he often left bruises and abrasions.”

And again, UGH.

Most sickening of all, there’s the fact that he was a very conscious predator:

Janna McCarthy, who worked for Ablow from May 2014 to July 2015, said Ablow would ask her to schedule appointments with attractive women who were “sad, lonely” and struggling with past trauma at times when no else would be in the office. “I was concerned that he was engaging in sexual contact with some of these women,” she wrote.

One couldn’t very well call that conduct sexual. Violent and abusive is what it was, and an abuse of ethics is what it is. I don’t know what medical school graduated him, or how on Earth he was granted a licence to practice.

But if there is any justice in this world, he will soon be without that…and with it, the means and opportunity to prescribe horse tranquilizers to any more struggling women.

Economics professor explains Venezuela’s capitalist putsch

…as well as the Green New Deal, and the hullabaloo surrounding it:

Prof. Wolff points out that hyperinflation is a capitalist problem, not a socialist one. He also points out that the original Roosevelt New Deal was not the cause of inflation, but rather caused prices to go down as production went up.

And he hammers home the point that Bolivia, under Evo Morales, has NOT suffered the problems Venezuela has, even though Evo is as much a socialist as the PSUV ruling party of Venezuela. Quite the contrary: Bolivia’s economy has grown on multiple fronts, and the Bolivian people in turn have benefited.

In short: The economic rationales for the Venezuelan putsch are nonsense. The news reports pushing for the putsch are nonsense. The liberal-democratic rationale for supporting the putsch is nonsense.

So, when are people of actual good will going to condemn this nonsense?
