Short ‘n’ Stubby: Ms. Manx does Doomsday

It’s been a hot while, but the Manx is meowing again. Yes, folks, the calico kitty is back, with some short news items for y’all. And this time, it’s all about the imminent end of the world. So strap in and get yourselves a drink…

…because you’ll be needing it. Ready? Here we go!

First off, it’s getting so bad in Thailand that even the local monkeys are running riot. Why? No tourists to feed them! Practically nobody wants to travel right now. And who can blame them, with whole countries (buongiorno, Italy) under lockdown? And with mass graves (hello, Iran) so large that they’re visible from space? And with whole cruise ships, banned from docking at their usual ports of call? Even Canada is considering closing its border with the US because COVID-19 cases there have been cropping up at a frightening pace.

Yes, that all sounds alarming. And it should spur us to act properly; as the SARS and MERS crises have shown, taking swift precautions against the spread of the virus is the best way to prevent mass hospitalizations (and mass deaths, too). But panic buying is not the way to deal with it, people. There’s enough toilet paper to go around. Picking the store shelves bare just because you might need to self-isolate for a couple of weeks is counterproductive, and trying to corner the market on antiseptic wipes and hand sanitizer, with an eye to reselling, will only lead to more sick people in the immediate future, and a huge backlash against the profiteers later. (Also, Ms. Manx would like you to remember that the stockmarkets are not the real economy, and that panic dumpers, like panic buyers and panic profiteers, can go fuck themselves.)

But if you think alarming news reports are bad, remember that denial ain’t no river in Egypt, Cleo. Two of FUX Snooze’s more idiotic “journalists” are off the air because they got too stupid even for Rupee Murdoch’s ultra-partisan crapaganda machine. Donnie Drumpf is still in denial, too, refusing to take responsibility, and claims to have tested negative for the virus; hard to believe, given that he interacted with an aide to his fellow fascist in Brazil, who has since come down with the disease. (Ms. Manx is glad to hear, however, that Sophie Trudeau is recovering well since being diagnosed herself.)

Canada is, believe it or not, at the forefront of this struggle, and the successes are mounting even if the climbing case numbers don’t seem to offer much encouragement right now. A team of scientists at Sunnybrook Hospital and U of T (Toronto) and McMaster University (Hamiliton) have isolated the virus. A Canadian doctor is the WHO’s go-to guy in Wuhan and elsewhere (and stow the Newfie jokes, please, says the Manx.) And you’ll never guess who’s already found an effective nature-derived remedy for SARS, Ebola, Zika and maybe, COVID-19. (Hint: He’s the brother of a former prime minister, and the anti-inflammatory agent he found to be remarkably helpful against other killer viruses is present in tea, many foods, and OTC medications and supplements, too.)

Meanwhile, in Italy, people are spreading hope and cheer (and not the virus) from their balconies with songs and encouraging slogans written on flags, and by using humor to help them get through their period of self-isolation. And others have been using their social-media reach to teach others the most effective way to kill the virus: namely, WASHING YOUR HANDS. Yes, that’s right, you don’t need to panic-buy and hoard TP, or Lysol wipes, or hand sanitizer, or anything else for that matter. Just use any hand soap you’re using already, and be thorough about it. Flattening the curve is something we can all do together.

Solidarity, not trillion-dollar bailouts and other predatory capitalist practices, will be what ultimately sees us through!

Quotable: Victor Hugo on progress and revolutions

“Progress infallibly wakes up, and, in short, we might say that it advances even in sleep, for it has grown. When we see it upright again, we find it taller. To be always peaceful belongs to progress no more than to the river; raise no obstruction, throw in no rocks; the obstacle makes water foam and humanity seethe. Hence troubles; but after these troubles, we recognize that there has been some ground gained. Until order, which is nothing more nor less than universal peace, is established, until harmony and unity reign, progress will have revolutions for way stations.”

— Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Headline Howler: The NYT’s epidumbic moment

Won’t someone please think of all the crapitalists (and the taxes they’re not paying)?

I’m sure that even without the highlight, you could see what the fuck was so wrong with this headline.

Q. How do we know the coronavirus is a socialist?

A: Because this is who it’s attacking:

I’d say it’s not only a socialist, but a locavore to boot. Because who else has the brains to take the proper precautions against globally transmitted viruses? Not capitalists, that’s for sure.

PS: And speaking of stupid capitalists, get a load of THIS:

Jesus Christ, can someone please give Donnie the hook? His mendacious stupidity is literally endangering people’s lives now.

Nazi hate comes for Bernie

Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it. Remember what happened the last time people shut their eyes to a turd in the political punchbowl? Some people do:

The perpetrator has a name and a face, by the way. It’s this guy:

Robert Sterkeson was the man who held up a Nazi flag at a Bernie Sanders rally in Arizona on March 5, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Sterkeson is the founder of the Islamophobic group, Bomb Islam.

Not long after unfurling the flag at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Sterkeson began to shout, “Heil Hitler,” witnesses said. Sanders’ supporters ripped the flag from Sterkeson’s hands before security escorted him out.

[…]

On his YouTube channel, Sterkeson refers to himself as a 2024 Presidential candidate. Sterkeson writes, “Sick of Clown World? Help me get the nuclear codes.” He then provides links to his BitCoin account. The majority of the videos on Sterkeson’s page are of him playing various video games. Sterkeson calls himself the “Commander in Chief” on a now-deleted LinkedIn page. The profile photo on that Linked-In page showed Sterkeson with an assault rifle.

On a separate account, Sterkeson writes, “Islam is the cancer. NUKES are the answer!” In his most recent video, Sterkeson posts and comments on a series of racist memes taking aim at African-Americans, the LGBTQ community, rapper Cardi B, and Jewish people. Sterkeson makes no mention of the Bernie Sanders rally. He spends the latter half of his show putting a racist angle on various news stories.

Sterkeson was featured in the 2016 BBC documentary, “Muslims Under Attack.” In the documentary, Sterkeson’s followers in Arizona are described as a “small group of army veterans, determined to uphold American values.”

Where have I heard of “a small group…determined to uphold American values” before? Especially in conjunction with Arizona? Oh yeah, in the case of another infamous Nazi named Robert. Namely, Robert Mathews. If you ever want to know what he was like and how he paralleled and prefigured this particular Robert, read The Silent Brotherhood sometime. He, Mathews, started out in his fascist career as a teenage John Bircher who morphed into a small-time “militia” leader in Arizona, and ended up in a fatal shootout with the feds (and being cremated in his own house, David Koresh-style, not quite ten years before Koresh became a household name for his own much more spectacular, but still strikingly similar, demise.)

With any luck, though, this Robert-from-Arizona won’t come to such a glorious end. Ignominy is what he deserves, and what he should earn, with his idiotic and fascistic deeds.

Also, he has a very punchable face.

ETA: And looky here at what Vaush has found. Can you say IRONY POISONING, kiddies?

Yeah. It’s all just clowny Honkler memes until someone “jokes” (but not really) that he wants to be president on a kill-the-Muslims platform. That’s pretty much where he and the deadly earnest Mathews diverge, but it helps if you realize that none of these guys are really joking…they’re just acting like they are because it’s good propaganda to lure in the goofy gamer boys.

Or because memes are magic, or some such dumb shit.

So THAT’s how they got the CN trains moving again.

This afternoon, one of the CN trains parked on the rails (there are three pairs of them, plus one set of CP tracks) behind my house finally departed for points east, after the blockade near the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory was lifted. I knew something was up two days ago, when I heard ticking noises coming from that same train, and realized that the engine was running after more than two weeks’ silence.

I figured that something was up, but exactly what, I didn’t know. Maybe they were just warming up the brake lines to make sure that nothing was jammed when the trains started running again? But that made little sense. The weather was actually unseasonably warm at the time.

Well, now I know what that “something” was. It was “something” like this:

And no, that’s not satire.

Meanwhile, there are still skirmishes going on between police and indigenous protesters not far from here. This was one of them:

The takedown of a Tyendinaga Mohawk blockade on CN Railway tracks at a level crossing east Belleville on Monday hasn’t ended disruptions in the area for rail officials trying to reopen the Toronto-Montreal corridor after nearly three weeks of hundreds of freight train cancellations.

A second protest group of local Mohawks camped not far down the tracks near the original protest site continue to hamper CN officials and Ontario Provincial Police working to get freight and passenger train traffic moving again.

A Canadian National Railway engine collided Wednesday with wooden pallets strewn across the tracks near the second encampment of Tyendinaga Mohawk demonstrators along the tracks at a Highway 49 CN overpass.

Demonstrators were witnessed dragging debris Wednesday morning toward a patch of scorched earth on the railway tracks where a burning tire was thrown Monday evening.

Ontario Provincial Police were on scene to counter protester efforts to block further rail traffic.

Possibly that’s why just one of the two trains on the tracks behind my house has moved, and the other is still waiting.

Despite the inconvenience, though, I’m on the side of the Mohawks…and the Wet’suwet’en people as well. Capitalism has had its own way, and had it unobstructed in this country, for far too long already. If humanism and environmentalism don’t become our prevailing ethics, this planet is doomed. And that’s going to be a helluva lot worse than a bit of temporary inconvenience to some people who are already so rich that they wouldn’t really miss the extra money.

Heroes for Today: The cat rescuer of Wuhan

A short video of a volunteer who checks on pets left behind in Wuhan by quarantined owners who were caught out of town as the coronavirus epidemic took hold (and still grips the city). It seems like a small thing to do, but it can be heartbreaking to look for animals that may or may not still be alive, and, if alive, are often bewildered by their humans’ absence.

It should go without saying that they do NOT eat cats in Wuhan, and that people there love cats just as much as anyone else, but bigots and barbarians are gonna bigot. Barbarously.
