“Until now, I was with the opposition”: A Venezuelan’s change of heart

venezuela-as-woman

Today, Venezuela faces another presidential election, its second in less than a year. And while many in the local and foreign private media are already calling it for Capriles like FUX Snooze did for Dubya in Florida 2000 (remember?), a very different truth is emerging on the ground. This week, Aporrea published an opinion piece from a former opposition supporter, María Alejandra Fernández, which caused a sensation on that site, becoming one of its most-read op-eds ever. It reveals some rather remarkable things that I doubt you will be seeing in our media up here, so I’ll take the liberty of reproducing it for you here:

It’s strange to be writing with the intent of publishing on a website which for years used to send me into rages. I am a Venezuelan, a professional for several years, graduated with honors from a recognized private university here. I don’t work directly in my profession, because I manage a local business from which I earn enough to lead a comfortable life.

I live in the east of Caracas. I was taught from childhood to love my neighbors, and honesty. I was a very innocent girl, which caused me to be deceived as to the human quality of many people. I’ve always been interested in social issues, since I think we all must have a role to play in this life, and this role is either social or it is nothing. Albert Einstein said “Only a life which is lived in service of others, is worth living.”

I always found it detestable how, in the 1990s, the great majority of the people in my country had not the least access either to healthy food, much less other resources necessary for life, knowing how the income from the oil bonanza was significant and one sector of society had those resources all to themselves.

I never had a very good impression of Chávez from the outset. My conservative family called him things like a “violent lunatic” and at my age, I was unable to analyze this more deeply.

Well, I know that this publication will cause me serious problems with my family. It doesn’t matter to me. I have to say that I’m tired of it. I’m tired of how the opposition, for whom I voted so many times (including last October 7) lies at every moment, all the time, without any serious consequences.

I remember how in 2002 they told me we would lose control over our own children. This caused me great anxiety and I felt a real hatred for Chávez. Every time he appeared on TV I cursed him, and changed the channel. That’s how I came to be. I almost never saw him.

When Chávez died, I was alone at home. I started to think: Was this man, really, deserving of all my hate? Wasn’t he, maybe, always coherent and sincere when it came to all his intentions and ideas? Didn’t he really live up to all the vows he made? With all these doubts, I confess, since I am a voracious reader and inveterate student, I decided to investigate and read in the most objective manner possible to recreate for myself a political criterion with the least possible bias.

Then, ladies and gentlemen….You can’t imagine how much I cried. I set out in a very objective way to seek information and videos of every kind, I read negative criticisms of Chávez, but without bias, I read the positive ones, the vision which I had despised for so long.

I must confess that I am deeply sorry for having opposed his mandate and for having cursed him so. He was a man with flaws, but, definitively, Chávez changed the political history of my country and he changed it for the better. That is something objective, palpable, demonstrable.

After having been in that state of shock, I began to ask myself: How is it possible that for so many years, a person like me, who considered myself intelligent, graduated with honors, could have been deceived like that? Because yes, they deceived me.

In no part of any of Chávez’s speeches, nor those of any Bolivarian speaker, did anyone say that the government planned to take away our children. The problem was bias. The media I read painted Chávez as a villain and that was it. And so I believed, because “it must be true, it was in the papers.”

For that reason, everything that was said about him, always negative, was automatically believed. And every week, some new commentary came out that struck terror. In me, they succeeded. And believe me, I never wanted anything bad for my country, quite the contrary. That’s how they kept filling us with doubts, fears and RAGE.

Once I read how they maybe wanted to throw us out of our homes. I believed it like a fool. Another time, I read that they would deny us credit for buying cars. And so, I made up a long list of things I remembered that caused me outrage, and which, curiously, NEVER came to be. Everything was false, to make us afraid.

And lamentably, much of the middle class, which had worked hard to get what they had, felt threatened by the government, through some error in the speeches of government spokespeople who didn’t know to distinguish the super-rich “bourgeoisie” from the middle class, which only works and lives comfortably. But fundamentally, the people felt threatened because of the media. May of the falsehoods which I believed, no one from the Chavista sector had said; always it was the private media.

So I started to think about many things. I recalled the items which insinuated that the government would take away our shops, that the government would prohibit us from owning two cars. I ask of the oppositionists who are reading me: Do you realize how many years they’ve been fooling you? I realized.

On the other hand, I tought: Chávez said “I’m going to start a housing mission”, and every day they gave people houses. Chávez said in the 1990s: “I’m going to make profound changes” and, do you remember? He did make profound changes. Always, from the 1990s onward (I found videos) Chávez took JUST ONE LINE, and always, he followed through. Look for videos, if you like, of Chávez on YouTube, on Oscar Yánez’s show. All, ALL of his campaign promises, he kept.

The truth is on Chávez’s side. I have not the slightest doubt. What I do have is a profound regret for not having listened to Chávez all those times and for not having contributed ideas toward the construction of this country which, I now understand, belongs to everyone. And it belongs to everyone not because I say so, but because it’s the truth. We all can use the medical system from the health mission, my neighbors vote for the opposition and they buy Orinoco cars. Instead of taking away the small shops, the government has closed NOT ONE, and has created incentives for new businesses. It is, for the first time in history, pushing national production. I suddenly began to see all that I had not seen before.

Yes, there are MANY problems. But many of those are not the fault of Chávez or the Chávez government. Insecurity, for example. The brother of a friend was killed a few years ago. After an investigation, it became known that one of those involved was a 25-year-old militant of [the opposition group] Voluntad Popular. Could anyone say that the homicides are the fault of Chávez and Maduro when the triggerman was a member of the opposition? Could anyone maybe say that it was the fault of the opposition? The answer, in both cases, is NO. The fault, aside from all cultural and structural causes, lies with him who pulled the trigger, and no one else.

Someone might say: The state is responsible for guaranteeing security. I reply: Yes, that’s true. And I ask myself: Has Chavismo made efforts? The reply, without any doubt, is an overwhelming YES. They created a UNIVERSITY exclusively dedicated to the issue of security, they are graduating thousands of police, they are working on the structural causes. This canNOT be denied.

The subject of oil, which, according to my studies, is the most important one in our economy, was rescued by Chávismo from all possible viewpoints. I have had the opportunity to study the matter. The transformations have happened from the ground up. I remember, as a little girl, seeing MANY malnourished children in the city, and now I don’t see even one. There are still poor children, but as a country, I sense that we are on the right track. Because you can’t reverse so much misery with just the stroke of a pen, that I have been able to think over, reflect upon, and understand.

Finally, I want to make an appeal to all people of good will who are absolutely in the opposition. I come from there, I know there is good will in many people who vote for the opposition. Many people want peace, tranquility, prosperity, and an end to poverty. What there is not much of there, is critical and profound reflection, self-criticism. You, friends, cousins who are reading this, students at UCAB, USM, UCV: Don’t go on being fooled. Look for materials, search the archives, be critical, reflect, have ideas, but let them be your own, researched. Question all rumors which come to you, no matter what. Don’t be fooled as I was fooled. Don’t hate me, you know that I respect you and that I want the best for Venezuela. Respect me and let me make my case. Be sincere with yourselves. Complexify your thoughts; those who are good in mathematics will know what I mean by “complexify”.

Don’t believe that if Capriles wins (which ALL the polls strongly deny), a stroke of his pen will make all the problems disappear. On the contrary, there will be a terrible conflict because it is clear that Capriles, in Miranda, interfered with the missions, and if he becomes president some day, it will be worse. The people of this land, who have been able to go to school thanks to Chávez, who have been able to work thanks to Chávez, who have better health thanks to Chávez — all those people won’t stand for losing those things and having them privatized. And that’s exactly Capriles’s plan, privatization; read it, I read it, read both of them. All of them. Don’t believe that the criminals will say “Now that Capriles has won, we’ll stop killing and robbing”. The problem is MUCH more complicated than that. I don’t believe a fanatical Chavista will take away their electricity.

The problems are complex. Don’t believe that Capriles will be a better president, since he has been a PATHETIC governor. I have a cousin who has a lovely daughter with a serious heart condition, and the little girl is alive thanks to the children’s hospital [that Chávez built], because my cousin lost her resources, she sold her apartment to take her for treatment in the US…Do you know why she sold her apartment? So she wouldn’t have to take the girl to a Chavista hospital. When she had no money left, she took the little one to the Children’s Cardiac Care Centre because she had no options left. The beautiful girl is alive thanks to that hospital. She didn’t pay a cent. She, my cousin Aracelis, will also vote for Maduro. We no longer hate Chávez, my dear cousin; that’s better. Want to see how the hospital came to be? Watch this, I saw it live on TV, my cousin agrees, and I cried:

Another thing: There is nothing more false to say than that this system of government is dictatorial, as many have said. I have friends who come from Spain and say that there’s democracy there, when there’s a king whom no one elected and the government is against the majority of the people, while they say that here there’s a dictatorship when there’s at least one election every year and the participation of the people in EVERYTHING is undeniable. Many of my friends are oppositionists because it’s the thing to do, not from principle. Pardon me, but it’s true!

I will vote for Maduro, in honor of that man who, though he had his faults, was a GIANT in the history of the world…and because I won’t let the same people who tricked me for years to go on tricking me. The Chávez project is represented by Maduro, and there is no rumor strong enough to belie this great truth. How I regret not having realized it sooner. Thank you, Chávez, for all you gave to your poor people, now I understand why those people love you with such a passion.

Sirs, you have taken a great weight from my shoulders. Thank you so much.

Translation mine.

María Alejandra is by no means alone. A few days ago I posted an article and some videos about some other former oppositionists who have also done some soul-searching and come to the same conclusion: The Bolivarian project is working, Venezuela is changing for the better thanks to Chávez, and the only “transition” that can occur now, the only one that should take place, is toward a deeper and more widespread form of the same.

Capriles not only can’t do that, he wouldn’t do anything but the opposite. His only plan is the same disastrous old one that threw Venezuela into the crisis that spurred Chávez to action in the first place, back in February of 1992. All Capriles wants to do is privatize everything that Chávez either nationalized or built from the ground up. Everything, including the children’s cardiological centre that saved the cousin’s daughter for no charge. In other words: Capriles would have forced María Alejandra’s cousin to do the same things that the privatized US healthcare system would: sell off all she had, go bankrupt…and still not get enough care for the little girl.

And to think the opposition media demonized Chavecito as a stealer of houses and children? What a joke.

But here’s the real key to everything: When the media have a corporate agenda, of course they’re going to do everything in the corporate interest. Including lying. And even intelligent, educated people can fall for it if they’re not highly media-aware. María Alejandra found that out the hard way, and sadly very late, after Chavecito was already gone. She’s wiser now, and that’s going to make a huge difference. As more people open their eyes, I think we’ll be hearing more stories like hers.

And when today’s election results are in, and they show an overwhelming victory for Nicolás Maduro, at least you, dear reader — unlike your corporate media crapaganda peddlers — won’t be wondering why anymore. Just like María Alejandra.

PS: Looks like María Alejandra’s article was very impressive outside of Venezuela, too. Rafael Correa, the president of Ecuador, recently tweeted that everyone should read it. So there you go. What better endorsement do you need?

Music for a Sunday: Adelante Comandante!

Ska-P was in Caracas this past week to give a concert at Diego Ibarra Square. The mohawked muchachos from Spain put on a raucous, ska-punky, absolutely fantastic show in which they saved their best for last:

BTW, in light of today’s elections, lead singer Pulpul told the audience, “I won’t be able to vote on the 14th. You’ll have to vote for me.” Gee, I wonder who he’d vote for…

Wankers of the Week: Margaret Fucking Thatcher Memorial Edition

maggie-jimmy.jpg

Crappy weekend, everyone! Yup, I’m still “mourning” the “loss” of Maggie Fucking Thatcher. Just like I’m “mourning” her pedophile pal, Jimmy Fucking Savile, in the picture above. Which is to say I’m still only sorry it didn’t happen sooner. A LOT sooner. It would have saved so much anger, indignation and mourning in other quarters. And you know who else I won’t be mourning, because they will be no loss either? These people, in no particular order…

1. Sarah Fucking Palin. How singularly appropriate that she compares herself to the so-called Iron Lady. Both are politically dead and have been for some time. And there’s not much going on with either one’s grey matter anymore, either. PS: Remember when Maggie didn’t want to see her? Good times. PPS: And hey! Here’s something they actually do have in common. They both don’t need no education!

2. Allen Fucking Vigneron. Careful there, Archbishop. If you tell all the Catholics who support same-sex marriage to excommunicate themselves, you might just end up staring at an empty church, wondering where everybody went!

3. Tom Fucking Matlack. Oh, you poor projecting baby. All those evil feminists criticizing you for being such a Nice Guy™. And for the way you pat them on the head and tell them to stop fighting for women’s rights and making a “zero-sum” game out of equality! How dare they decide for themselves what feminism is, without your MRA-lite input? Bitches!

cowboy-henk.jpg

4. F. W. Fucking De Klerk. Maggie Thatcher was a “steadfast critic of apartheid”? When? Where? All I remember is how she used to slam Nelson Mandela for being a leftist, and how much she supported South Africa at a time when popular opinion was turning against it, on account of apartheid.

5. Star Fucking Parker. Slave plantations were run by liberal Democrats? Ooooohahahahahaha. That’s a good one. Almost as good as #4.

6. Gordon Fucking Klingenschmitt. Once again, must resist the temptation to sing “His name is my name too, tra-la-la”. And once again, ugh, the projections of his own sick sexual fantasies. I’ve never seen a same-sex marriage consisting of “three women and a dog”. Only ones consisting, boringly, of two men or two women. As for “recruiting”: If these military-style “recruiters” exist, I’ve never met one. Very poor organizing on the part of the Evil Homo-Sex-You-All Agenda!

7. Daniel Fucking Foster. Behold, the soooooper-genius that inhabits the National Revisionist. Maggie Fucking Thatcher was a “feminist” all of a sudden! Uh, no. Try a bat-shit old misogynist in a skirt, Dan.

rot-in-hell-maggie.jpg

8. Mark Fucking Levin. Look who’s calling for a Night of the Long Knives! And conservatives wonder why we think they’re all Nazis? Well, maybe we’d stop thinking it if they stopped acting it.

9. Ileana Fucking Ros-Lehtinen. What a drag it is getting old, eh? Not just her, but her Cold War absolutist ideology. Enough, already! If people from the US want to travel to Cuba without a “cultural exchange” excuse, let them! The embargo hasn’t worked, and it’s not ever going to. Cuba will stay Cuba (as opposed to a bigger, more lucrative Puerto Rico). And as much as it burns Ileana’s ass, it’s just fine with the rest of the world. Which is, by the way, quite welcome on the island. Ask any Canadian who’s been there.

10. Vladimir Fucking Putin. Look who’s bought into the whole crypto-racist “European demographic crisis” panic! Yup, it’s Pooty-Poot. And he seriously thinks the answer is to simply make it illegal to be gay. Or even to just talk about it. Maggie Fucking Thatcher tried that, Pooty. It didn’t work.

11. Rush Fucking Limbaugh. For a man who’s been through three failed marriages (and is working on #4), never produced an offspring, and who is widely suspected of pedophilia, the Pigman sure seems to have taken a concern-trolly interest in kiddies all of a sudden. And given the way he’s projecting it all onto Melissa Harris-Perry, that can only mean one thing: Parents, lock up your kids! Rush is AFTER them!

thatcher-children.jpg

12. Mitch Fucking McConnell. He must be really scared of Ashley Judd, because why else were his flunkies plotting to trash her? Well, now at least the Bitch doesn’t have to worry about her anymore, because she’s not running. Her own chickenshit party saw to that. Good job, you guys! PS: Ha, ha. The Bitch really is a whiny one, ain’t he? PPS: Ha, ha, ha. Karma’s an even bigger bitch.

13. William Fucking Blakely. Life in Tennessee must be really fucking boring if you have to get your jollies by honking your horn at women on the street while driving 90 miles per hour…and WANKING, all at the same time.

14. Liz Fucking Cheney. So, I hear you want to become a senator. Can’t you take a hint from your old man’s resounding unpopularity? No, of course you can’t. You’re a Cheney. You’re totally deaf to everything but the roar of your massive, overblown fucking ego.

15. Patriarch Fucking Kirill. Yes, that’s right, Pooty-Poot’s Numero Uno Amigo and Bestest Fwiend 4Evarrrrrr is a wanker, too…for being predictably, essentialistically, and oppressively fucking sexist. An old man who supposedly took a vow of poverty but wears a gold watch, presuming to tell women what to do with their bodies. Not for nothing did Karl Marx say religion was the opiate of the masses. NOW do you know why Pussy Riot revolted against both of these bastards? I’m actually on the verge of wishing Russia were communist again. Thanks a fuckload, you guys.

iron-lady-scrapped.jpg

16. John Fucking Lydon. And on the other side of the ledger, there’s Johnny Fucking Rotten, who, interestingly, suffers from the exact same problem as Pooty-Poot and his sidekick Kirill the Kleptocrat. Yes, that’s right, more sexism. Maybe Pussy Riot should protest him, too. What kind of punk-rock spirit is this “woman, know thy place” shit, anyway? Are all three of them impotent, and is THAT the problem? PS: No, seriously, Johnny: FUCK YOU.

17. Stephen Fucking Harper. Don’t adjust your TV sets, folks. It’s only Harpo, trying again, and in vain, to paint everything in Canada SupposiTory blue. Wonder how much his Photoshop disaster is costing us taxpayers this time.

18. Brad Fucking Paisley. Dude, trust me…there is NOTHING accidental about your racism. It is bred in the bone, and the product of your good ol’ cracker upbringing. That is all.

19. Ted Fucking Nugent. Another day, another racist death threat, another promise the Noodge hasn’t met. Another song, another dance, another skidmark in his pants. Yawwwwn. Sing a new song, already!

more-like-maggie.jpg

20. Michelle Fucking Presnell. She wants to stop Muslim prayers in the name of “religious freedom”. BTW, this was in North Carolina…yes, the state where her fellow Repugs are trying to create a state religion, in direct contravention of the separation of church and state. Yo, Michelle? Look up IRONY. No, not in your bible. Use a dictionary, dumbass.

21. Ben Fucking Carson. Yeah, cancelling your talk would be a VERY good idea. Especially if all you can do during it is mouth platitudes about “traditional marriage”, not realizing that marriage has already been redefined several times throughout the centuries.

22. Kevin Fucking Purfield. There may be a special place in hell for people who harass the families of shooting victims, but here on Earth there’s another place, one that will do just fine for you. It’s called JAIL.

23. Gladys Fucking Zimmerman. Funny, lady, but you and I have very different notions of what it means for a justice system to fail. I thought it failed when the guy who killed Trayvon Martin wasn’t arrested, simply because Trayvon was black and his killer was only “standing his ground” in a pre-emptive attack, preceded by the immortal words, “fucking coon”. You…seem to think your son is innocent, despite a preponderance of evidence suggesting otherwise. And as much as you’d like to believe that’s a “media myth”, there’s a dead kid in his grave, and he ain’t no myth.

burn-in-hell.jpg

24. Donnell Fucking Baines. Dude, you seem to have problems understanding the concept of free will. Women don’t come back to a pimp because they WANT to; they come back because they know the motherfucker is gonna hunt them down and kill them if they don’t. Nobody wants to be a pimp’s slave. But hey! Now you’ve got 62 years to think that one over. And if there’s any justice in the world, some big ugly dude named Bubba is gonna make you into what you made those girls.

25. Pat Fucking Robertson. Shorter: We can’t have peace and a two-state solution in the Middle East. God wants WAR WAR WAR! Yes, Patwa, and Cthulhu wants YOU YOU YOU!

26. Rick Fucking Santorum. Not only is he a whiny little bully and a shit-stain on your sheets, he’s also an $18,000 WANKER. PS: And a liar.

27. Ann Fucking Coulter. What does it take to get the Coultergeist off of FUX Snooze? A death threat, framed as a lame “joke”, against Meghan McCain. Yes, that’s right, she’s talking elimination now. Can we just eliminate her from the public eye altogether, PLEASE?

moochers-in-heaven.jpg

28. Shawn Fucking Akers. Can you make hide or hair of his paranoid word soup? Drop me a line in the comments slot if you can.

29. Glenn Fucking Beck. Speaking of paranoid word soup: Glenn Fucking Beck, ladies and gentlemen. He’s still alive, and speaking from an underground bunker. And bawling his eyes out because his personal physician isn’t coming fast enough with the “vitamin” shots.

30. Rand Fucking Paul. Yeah, who needs civil rights, anyway? Oh, only the black college kids you’re trying to convince otherwise. You, a privileged white boy who’s never had to fight for a thing in his life because it all gets handed to you by default. What would you know? Everything, you think? Dude. You know nothing. NOTHING. Now go home and let that sink in.

31. Alan Fucking Keyes. Actually, you do have a right to pick your nose and eat boogers, although whether you’d do so in public is another story. Oh wait…by reaching for stupid analogies to justify institutional homophobia, you’ve already done just that…BOOGER EATER.

rust-in-peace.jpg

32. Benjamin Fucking Curell. You know you’re impotent when you take an axe to an empty abortion clinic, to make those wicked baby-killing jezebels FEAR YOUR MIGHTY MIGHTY MANHOOD. And God. Yeah.

33 and 34. Dave Fucking Agema and Tony Fucking Perkins. Schools make kids gay? Mary, PLEASE. Guys, when are you two gonna get a room and get naked and awkward together? Come on…you know you wanna!

35. Pamela Fucking Geller. Finally, word is getting out. This harpy is persona non grata in synagogues, since all she ever does is talk idiotic smack about Muslims, and clearly knows nothing about their religion — or even her alleged own, for that matter. The only news that could please me more is to hear that she’s gone broke and her server is permanently down.

36. Pam Fucking Stenzel. Wow, professional slut-shamers actually exist! And some of them are female! Hey, Pam? I can look into people’s eyes and tell things about them, too…and what I see in yours is that you’re a motherfucking LUNATIC.

thatcher-legacy.jpg

37. Stacey Fucking Campfield. “Using children as props is shameful,” says the idiot who thinks nothing of using children as dartboards for his punitive “welfare” policies. Fortunately, the eight-year-old “prop” in this instance totally pwned him.

38. Lisa Fucking Biron. Well, now we all know what “family values” really means. It means making lesbian porn with one’s own underage daughter. Hey, gotta keep it all in the family, right? Otherwise, the Homo-Sex-You-All Agenda WINS!

39. Bill Fucking Donohue. And sticking with Family Values, we finally also know what the real purpose of marriage is. It’s PROCREATION! Not love, not happiness, not publicly recognizing a union, none of that mooshy-gooshy stuff. Nope…it’s just all about churning out the kids. Soullessly, mindlessly and lovelessly, of course.

40. Carol Fucking Thatcher. Oh “golliwog”, oh golly gee. The apple doesn’t fall far from the racist tree, I see.

traits-of-a-psychopath.jpg

41. Bryan Fucking Fischer. Being as well acquainted with the Gay Agenda™ as I am, which is to say, about as well as a straight person CAN be, I can honestly say that I haven’t heard any of my gay friends discussing a fiendish plot to make Christians wear yellow stars. Or crosses. Or triangles. Or anything else, for that matter. About all they have been discussing is making it safe and legal to be gay, and legal to marry one’s gay partner, and illegal to beat gay people up on the street, or in a bar, or wherever. Some fucking Holocaust THAT turns out to be!

42. Willie Fucking Colón. Ruben Blades wouldn’t be caught walking down to the corner with him. Neither would anyone in Puerto Rico. This is what you get for insulting the president of Venezuela. Sucks to be you, Willie!

43. Steve Fucking Stockman. “If babies had guns, they wouldn’t be aborted”? Guh. That makes a shitload of sense, considering that babies are only babies once born. And who is stupid enough to give a child a gun? Whenever the Revolution comes to the United States of Amnesia, the first to face the firing squad should be the politicians whose entire philosophies fit on stupid fucking bumper stickers.

frankie-boyle-on-thatcher.jpg

44. Steven Fucking Crowder. And speaking of bumper-sticker sloganeering by tweeting twats, how about FUX Snooze’s own Mr. UnFunny? Yeah, asshole, sorry to shock you, but your constitution actually doesn’t guarantee the right to own a gun, unless you’re part of a well-regulated militia. So, unless you’ve joined the military, you’re shit outta luck, stupid fuck. On the other hand, it does indeed guarantee the right to healthcare…”promote the general welfare” mean anything to you? Read the Preamble, and STFU about the Second Fucking Amendment, already.

45. Dana Fucking Perino. As a counterpoint to all the people out there telling Dubya’s former spokestwit NOT to quit her day job, I’m going to say: Yes, Dana, please do quit your day job. But not to become a rapper. I want you to just go…the fuck…AWAY. Oak hay?

46. Joe Fucking Arpaio. No, Sheriff, that documentary didn’t set out to make you look racist. You do that just by being yourself.

47. Jean-Denis Fucking Rouillon. Bras are evil and will make your boobs sag! So don’t wear one…unless you’re no longer young, small or perky enough to go braless. In which case, you should wear that saggy-making industrial-strength armor-plated underwire, you gross vache. (Seriously, what is this guy, a jiggle freak? Mais oui.)

thatcher-austerity.jpg

48. Kathleen Fucking Parker. If you can’t control your guns, you shouldn’t be allowed to own one. That’s how gun control actually works, believe it or not. Also: Nancy Lanza taught her mentally ill son how to “responsibly” use guns? Yeah. So responsibly, he stole several of hers, killed her with one, then shot up an entire fucking school. This much stoopid all in one heap can’t be healthy, and shouldn’t be legal either.

49. Andrew Fucking Wakefield. Yes, that’s right…the “doctor” who was disgraced for his claim that measles vaccine causes autism. This time, he’s wanking about how it’s the public health authorities, and not his bogus theories, that are to blame for measles outbreaks resulting from panicky parents refusing to vaccinate their kids just because of some pseudo-scientific crap they got off the Internet. Which leads us right back to Andrew Fucking Wakefield. He couldn’t be more responsible for the outbreak if he’d injected the kids with measles virus himself.

50. Boris Fucking Johnson. Hark! The Perambulating Haystack Otherwise Known as the Lord Mayor of London hath spoken. And lo! What came out was a complete and utter (and boringly predictable) wank. A statue to Iron Tits in Trafalgar Square? Yeah, that’ll go over well. And by “go over well”, I mean it will be covered in graffiti and rotten produce in no time.

majuncher.jpg

And finally, to “Eperez”, at 114.163.130.198. This troll thought to give me a lecture about how falling-to-shit awful things are in Venezuela after 14 years of Chavecito. And even had the temerity to tell me to stay there for a year to find out what horrors s/he had had to live through, boo-hoo. Dude or dudette, I’d feel a lot more chastened if (a) you had written it in Spanish, so I knew you could at least speak the language (I can understand it, you know — I translated the news item you pooped on!), and (b) you weren’t writing it from Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture…JAPAN. But hey, thanks for the feedback, anyway. You’ve shown me a couple of very interesting things: (a) how desperate and shameless you silly escualidos really are, to be scolding me from so far outside of Venezuela; (b) how stupid you think we North Americans are (you might have a point there, if you were talking to one who believed everything our lovely anglo crapaganda mills told us); and (c) HELLO, THIS IS WHY YOUR CANDIDATES KEEP LOSING ELECTIONS. Nobody is dumb enough to vote for such transparent liars…except another fucking escualido!

Good night, and get fucked!

Festive Left Friday Blogging: The Return of a Friend

Fidel Castro — perhaps you’ve heard of him? — introduces a song by Raúl Torres, in honor of a good friend of Fidel’s. Here are the lyrics:

In a friend’s goodbye there is a delayed farewell
Words that freeze, wishes to have already said them
Tears that can’t be shed because you can’t accept that he’s gone
Pain turned into glory, an extended dawning.
For the departure of a friend who brought us back laughter
There are no definitive, final farewells of ashes
Such an aching heart won’t believe in the taking
Of death which has tried to stain his red shirt.
All the tenderness of this friend dispersed on the breeze
Of a people who had been asleep,
Of an America broken to bits
No one thinks he’s gone, it was just a wee moment at Mass
And he’ll be back with Sandino, with Che, Martí and Bolívar
That trace the friend left behind, that antidote of life
Against the serpent that dreams of a divided America
He who raised up the beggars and shared his food
His way of living will never be measured.
All the friends of the friend have a soul embroidered
With the phrases he uttered with a good-natured smile
No one thinks he’s gone, it was just a wee moment at Mass
And he’ll be back with Sandino, with Che, Martí and Bolívar.

Translation mine.

Good luck trying to keep a dry eye, too.

The ironies of the Venezuelan opposition, part 16

ven-oppo-peaceful

“Understand, imbecile, we’re peaceful here and we respect freedom of expression!” — a thug from the peaceful, united opposition, beating up on a reporter from VTV.

Howdy, everyone, and welcome to today’s installment of VenOpIronía. We’ve got lots of ground to cover, and lots of stories and links. Today, it’s all about the oppos and how peaceful they are. Here, for instance, we have some peaceful Majunche followers, demonstrating in the city of Mérida:

Anti-Chavista groups tried to rob stores on Wednesday, and launched attacks on the offices of the National Executive and the State Government, located in the city of Mérida, after a campaign rally there on the part of Henrique Capriles Radonsky.

“We denounce the violence of anarchic sectors of the ultra-right who are assaulting our comrades in the state government,” declared governor Alexis Ramírez to radio station YVKE Mundial.

Ramírez said that two individuals, wearing clothing with the logo of the Capriles campaign, tried to attack the government offices.

These persons have been identified as Antonio Marquina and Javier Solórzano, who were also in possession of a tear-gas canister.

Speaking on YVKE radio, Ramírez also reported that the Institute of Youth for the State of Mérida (INJUVEM), located on Avenida 5, had been attacked.

In the violence, a volunteer at the youth centre, Ramón Antonio Soto Rondón, was injured by a bottle to the face. He was taken to the University Hospital of Los Andes and remains in stable condition.

The anti-Chavista groups also committed aggressions against the YVKE Mundial office, as well as that of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, along with various commercial buildings in the state capital.

In all of these locations, officials of the State Police and the Bolivarian National Guard were deployed.

Translation mine. You can see video and photos from those riots (and the beat-up face of the unlucky Ramón Soto) here.

Meanwhile, here some paramilitaries masquerading as soldiers…

Two paramilitaries were captured in the installations of the 42nd Paratroop Brigade, an elite Venezuelan military unit located in the city of Maracay, Aragua.

The commander of the Fourth Armored Division of the Army, Division General Víctor Flores Urbina, informed that the suspects were captured on Sunday afternoon in a zone known as Los Polvorines, where weapons and munitions are stored.

At the moment they were discovered, one of the suspected paramilitaries was on a motorcycle, wearing a military uniform with the insignia of a lieutenant, which awakened the curiosity of the brigade post’s guards, because in that unit, all personnel wear camouflage fatigues.

The other suspect was dressed as a civilian and identified himself as a first lieutenant of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB); however, neither one carried documents identifying them as members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB).

“When they saw they had been discovered, both suspects offered 90,000 bolivars to the officials who had found them out, in exchange for letting them escape. However, the patriotic and nationalistic feelings of these officials took precedence,” said Flores.

During the arrest, officials confiscated handcuffs, bank debit cards, and military identification tags that contained such personal data as the blood type of the bearer. “These tags are used in situations of war, for which reason one may presume that these individuals were prepared for such situations.”

[…]

General Flores surmises that the suspects were conducting initial reconnaissance in the military installations to determine the alert level in the garrisons.

One of the suspected paramilitaries was identified as Exlan Jesús Moronta Arteaga, age 25, and the other is a minor of 17. Both remain in custody with the Military Prosecutor’s Office, in the charge of prosecutor Juan David Bermúdez.

And here is a strong candidate for Most Absurd Protest Ever:

In an action co-ordinated at national level, the owners of commercial centres confabulated with the opposition shock group Despierta Venezuela (Wake Up Venezuela) to campaign against Nicolás Maduro, thus contravening the legal statute which establishes that only accredited political parties can conduct campaigns.

Curiously, they allowed them to throw thousands of fake bolivar notes with a political message, when it’s strictly forbidden to “flyer” in those centres, at least when it comes to the stores that operate there, unless approved by the owners.

The fake bills look like a 100-bolivar note on the reverse side, but the obverse side says it has a value of 53.50 bolivars because it has been devalued. At the same time, it shows the face of acting president Nicolás Maduro and that of Fidel Castro, protesting the so-called “marriage between our government and the Cuban régime”.

It bears remembering that before the government announces the new exchange rate of 6.3 bolivars to the US dollar, the pseudo-economists of the opposition said that it would have to be devalued to 23 bolivars/dollar, the cost of the “parallel” dollar, which according to them is the “fair” price.

Also, one of the urgent measures of the Capriles government, upon arrival in the presidency, is to eliminate exchange controls and devalue the currency.

So this begs the question: What is it that these guys are protesting?

Translation mine.

I tried to upload a picture of the funny money, but the server rejected it. I think that tells us all we need to know about the validity of the Majunche campaign right there.

At this rate, it’s no wonder he’s planning to not recognize the election results. He’s going to lose, he knows it, and he’s just doing his damnedest to forestall the inevitable.

17 electrical saboteurs caught in Venezuela

It’s literally getting down to the wire in Venezuela. Yesterday, the military, which is in charge of securing the country’s electrical plants and stations, announced a major capture:

The chief of the Strategic Operational Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (CEO-FANB), Major-General Wilmer Barrientos, informed on Tuesday of the detention of 17 persons linked to acts of electrical sabotage in Venezuela.

“At the moment we have 17 detainees, caught in the act of sabotaging the installations of Corpoelec in our national territory, and they will face the judicial process,” said the military officer during a press conference.

Barrientos said that the citizens, some of whom are said to be military lieutenants, were detained in the city of Maracay, specifically in the Paratroop Brigade, and will be subjected to investigation by Military Intelligence.

Barrientos said that per instructions from president Nicolás Maduro, the distribution and transmission centres were also secured in order to take inventory of the repayments and “to be able to react promptly”.

At the same time, Barrientos notified that a shipment of necessary electrical materials had been recovered in the customs building. “We are improving, bit by bit, the response of the electrical system,” he said.

Barrientos emphasized that these measures have made it so that in some states, where there had been 50 critical circuits, now there are only four or six.

Barrientos called on Venezuelans to be conscientious in their use of electricity, and on the owners of shopping centres to turn on their generators during hours of peak demand.

“We are still working in the electrical sector, to keep the people as calm as possible, and we will act in this sector with all the necessary force so that there will be peace throughout the Bolivarian Republic,” he said.

Translation mine.

So, these sabotaging military lieutenants must be who the punks of JAVU were calling members of the “National Democratic Armed Forces” in the “protest” manual I translated here last night. Since they are at the lowest levels of the officer corps, it is doubtful the conspiracy reaches any higher. The High Command was purged of traitors years ago, after the coup of ’02 revealed to Chavecito and his government who was actually a loyal commander and who was not. Since then, any remaining bad apples have been picked off one by one, and the High Command has been clean. It is therefore highly unlikely that we will ever again see the crazy spectacle of a group of a dozen or so military officers, going before the cameras of an opposition-controlled TV station like they did in ’02, announcing that they could no longer be loyal because of some spurious accusation of government forces firing on unarmed demonstrators in the street.

Now we await the arrests of the Salvadoran terrorists, imported by Majunche to destabilize the country so that he can declare victory without winning a single legitimate thing. And, for that matter, the arrest of Majunche himself. It’s just a matter of time…

Terrorism and destabilization in Venezuela, all you can eat…

Venezuelan justice minister Néstor Reverol plays back audio of some highly incriminating phone calls between members of the Salvadoran terror cell that attempted to disrupt next Sunday’s presidential election. Here’s the story:

“Capriles has managed to find safe places, for our people…the team is already there, they tell me, and they’re working in groups to disorient the vote.”

This can be heard clearly in a telephone call between an ex-colonel from the Salvadoran Armed Forces (FAES), David Koch Arana, who is currently in Venezuela, ad the director of the right-wing Salvadoran ARENA party, Roberto D’Aubuisson, which took place between March 23 and 25 of this year.

The videos of the interference and the links between these Salvadoran mercenaries and the right-wing candidate Capriles Radonski, were presented by Minister Néstor Reverol, who played back both conversations.

On March 23, both Salvadoran agents confirmed that they had seen the reports on Capriles Radoski, whom they secretly identify as “C”, and two days later, they conversed at length in a phone call which implied immediate danger for the stability of Venezuela, which went as follows:

“Did you tell them that they’d be making like we’re working in the campaigns here? …Be careful, remember they already offered their support if they win, and that would be good for us,” says D’Aubuisson.

Koch Arana warns D’Aubuisson that the Venezuelan government already has information of the presence of these groups, so they have to be careful.

“They’ve started a hunt and supposedly they’ll inform the State that there are foreigners interfering in their political affairs,” says the Salvadoran ex-colonel.

The right-wing politician, D’Aubuisson, calms him down, saying that Capriles already has safe houses for them, but warns that it’s necessary to co-ordinate both groups because they are apparently unknown in Venezuela.

“I don’t know how the groups they sent are operating here, but I hope they don’t clash or have a conflict, since they don’t know each other. I’ll talk to them to see how they’re organizing, so they’re identified,” says D’Aubuisson.

Minister Reverol also showed the photo of another mercenary, identified as Julio Alberto Cornejo Quintanilla, who, according to intelligence reports, is already in Venezuela and is tasked with co-ordinating both shock groups.

Reverol assured that the Venezuelan government will not let mercenary groups destabilize the country and the April 14 elections. He confirmed that the security forces of the state are on the trail of the mercenaries and will execute raids and all necessary measures to prevent the plans of the destabilizing groups from coming to fruition.

Translation mine.

Let’s hope D’Aubuisson and Koch Arana are wetting their pants accordingly; the Venezuelan authorities are now on their tails. I hope they get the raids on camera for VTV, too.

And let’s hope they and Majunche are also wetting their pants over this incriminating info-dump about their little buddies in the bogus opposition “student” group, JAVU:

Operation Sovereignty

Plan of Action and Resistance of the United Active Youth of Venezuela (JAVU) for April 14, 2013

Introduction:

We’re just a few days away from a presidential election which from the start has been one of the most unjust and unequal of all time, while the Cuban government tightens its control on our nation by way of its principal puppet, the usurper Nicolás Maduro.

We call on all Venezuelans to overcome fear. We have demonstrated that when we demand with firmness and force, we achieve our objectives.

Giving up will never be an option. They will have to roll right over us if they think they can violate the constitution and abuse and take advantage of us without consequence, because:

1. No Venezuelan could be in agreement with such an embarrassment of a Defense Minister who bows down before the Brothers Castro and makes partisans of our Armed Forces.

2. No Venezuelan could be in agreement with a criminal Electoral Council, accomplice of opportunism and the principal party responsible for robbing Venezuelans of a free and fair electoral process.

3. No Venezuelan could be in agreement with a Supreme Tribunal of Justice which violates the Constitution, criminalizes protests, and legitimates the power of an usurper.

4. And above all, no Venezuelan could support an usurper who abuses the resources of the State, holds national broadcasts to campaign, and is afraid to publicly debate his ideas and proposals before the country.

This April 14, we will confront an unjust battle, but we’ll put up a fight, because beyond being the way to overcome our political differences, that day represents the opportunity to recuperate the constitution peacefully and reclaim the history they have tried to manipulate.

The international community should not be an accomplice to violations of international human rights treaties, but we’ll take care of ourselves, the Venezuelan people will fight for our rights.

We will take over the streets for civil disobedience by ay means necessary, because we know that you get respect when you overcome fear. Let the government make no mistake: We will never bow down before their power, the democratic student movement will never accept electio results that have been biased from the start.

We know that opportunity comes to us by the electoral way, but the electoral powers seek to manipulate the results to keep this illegitimate and usurping government in power. For that reason, JAVU, along with the political, economic and shock forces of the opposition, will not recognize said results. We call for civil resistance in the streets and, in this manner, we will make them respect the votes of the oppressed majority who want a change of government. There is no chance whatsoever that the usurper will win these elections unless the electoral organism helps him steal them.

We also will not recognize any opposition director or political organization that takes part in the deception. Any opposition speaker who calls for us to accept the results of the electoral fraud will be considered a paid stooge of this illegitimate government, and we will turn our methods against him.

Our civil democratic society must not forget that this national crisis is the absolute responsibility of the late Hugo Chávez, who tried in his day to take political power via a coup d’état and, in the same totalitarian spirit, consigned Venezuela to division, backwardness and Castro-communist dictatorship. We emphatically reject the electoral measures that the Democratic Unity Table has put forward and in which, as usual, they evade confrontation with the figure of Chávez.

Chavez is the sole party responsible for this sad reality, and we must not hide this fact. God gave us this new opportunity to put this country on the road to democracy once more!

For that reason, it is our duty as active citizens, from all of civil society, to aid in the development of the lines of action expressed here.

All of us must be part of Operation Sovereignty!

Long live Venezuela! Long live Venezuelan youth!

Lines of action to follow for the activation of Operation Sovereignty, April 14, 2013.

In the event of an electoral pronunciation in favor of the ruling party, JAVU will activate a Plan of Civil Resistance on three fronts:

1. Takeover of strategic public spaces in the most important cities of the land. These takeovers must be conducted efficiently, effectively, and quickly, after the Electoral Commission gives the election results, in such a way that the police forces are taken by surprise and unable to react. Also, they must be accompanied by protests (burning of tires and garbage, construction of barricades, and whatever other method.) This action will permit us to economically strangle the urban centers, as we will be stopping the distribution of foods and supplies, as well as the flow of fuel at service stations.

2. Creation of an opinion matrix of delegitimization of the Electoral Commission, the national government, the Armed Forces, the Judicial and Moral Powers, and the political parties, using the social networks. Our opinion leaders on Twitter and Facebook already are in the thick of things and know the lines to follow. The production of message content is our job and will be made known in a pertinent manner. The intention of this front is to replicate our messages as many times as possible and mobilize civil society to action in the streets of every city.

3. Execution of the Selective Social Boycott plan. On this front, we will be visiting governmental institutions and homes of government spokespeople in the most important cities, where we will take over governments and mayoralties that are in the hands of the ruling party. In this phase we count on the support of spokespeople authorized by the Catholic Church and the media who will legtimate our actions. We are establishing contacts with various officials from the National Democratic Armed Forces for a military uprising afterwards.

As the hours go by we hope that political and economic strangulation, as well as media power, will allow us to generate enough street-level support in civil society. In the first phase we will establish a New Parallel Government and will profess the existence of a Double Sovereignty with the intention of tipping civil society in our favor, via an opinion matrix based in the search for a union of said governments and mayoralties under our democratic leadership and the union of all Venezuelans.

Protest manual for street takeovers:

When the CNE announces the election results, move quickly to the strategic points of protest.
Wear comfortable clothing and bring the following: portable radios, vinegar, smartphones, cameras, drinking water, flashlights, lighters, caps and ski masks that can be worn like hoods, slingshots, gasoline, flammable products, and objects that can be used in self-defence.
Leave all personal documents at home.
Arrive at protest points on foot or by taxi. Don’t bring your car.
Come prepared to fight for Freedom and Democracy.

[List of cities and protest locations snipped for brevity.]

Translation mine.

As you can see, JAVU embodies the ironies of the “opposition youth” to the fullest. They talk about a government not respecting the constitution: WHICH constitution? The old, invalid one of 1961, which was scrapped in favor of the democratically written and ratified Bolivarian constitution of 1999? The Bolivarian constitution, promulgated by the same government these punks refuse to recognize as legitimate, even though it’s been elected, re-elected, and ratified by the people, as well as former US president Jimmy Carter himself?

What a fucking joke.

And then there are their “peaceful” protest methods. Burning tires, burning garbage, blocked roadways, and direct attempts, by preventing the flow of food, supplies and fuel, to starve out the people who voted for something other than imperial fascism. Straight out of Plan Guarimba, naturally. Gene Sharp, why are you not speaking out against this blatant misreading of your own widdle protest manual? Oh — that’s right, you’re against socialism. I forgot. Silly me!

Most intriguing of all is the allusion to their contacts within the media, the church, and the armed forces (notice how they don’t use the correct formal term of reference, which would be the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, or FANB for short.) In other words, the opposition media, the Roman Catholic hierarchy, and a certain sector of the Venezuelan armed forces is either covertly or overtly putschist, and not prepared to recognize the election results even when Jimmy Carter certifies them as free and fair. This is beyond disgusting; it is downright disturbing. It means that the same factions who tried to overthrow Chavecito in 2002-3 are still at it. They just don’t know when to call it a day and give in to democratic will. It would utterly demoralize them and rob their already meaningless lives of all purpose if they did. They would rather dedicate themselves to destruction than to construction. (Notice how they offer no plans whatsoever to build up the nation after they’re done wrecking it. That’s because they’re criminally incapable of making any.)

And, in the crowning irony, they call themselves “democratic”. This even though they can’t bear to recognize the repeatedly reiterated democratic will of the people: the constitution, the president, the electoral council, and all the other democratic institutions of the land. All of it might as well be trash for them to burn. Even the will of legitimate opposition party members means nothing to them. And a great many of those latter now plan to vote for Maduro, precisely because of punks like JAVU. In other words, this grand plan has already backfired on its would-be perpetrators.

These bullyboys would be more entertaining if they were less violent. They really are incredibly stupid, since their widdle plan is now known right down to the last detail, not only to the Venezuelan authorities, but to any English speaker who chances to read this silly little blog.

And if you, dear reader, still believe that they represent any legitimate democratic majority in Venezuela, just watch this space on Sunday the 14th and thereafter. That is, if you can bear to have your nose rubbed in it.

Funes calls for investigation of Salvadoran terror cell

mauricio-funes

A couple of days ago, I translated a denunciation by Venezualan acting president, Nicolás Maduro, of a Salvadoran terrorist cell believed to be working for his opponent, Henrique Capriles Radonski. Today, the president of El Salvador is doing his part to help his Venezuelan counterpart get to the bottom of it all:

Salvadoran president Mauricio Funes ordered an investigation into the denunciations of the government of Venezuela into the participation of sectors of the Salvadoran right-wing in plans to destabilize the South American country, which is in the midst of an election campaign.

“We will investigate the denunciation by president Maduro of a plan to assassinate him,” said Funes, during an interview with the Mundo Fox Informa channel.

“The least we can do, as a friendly government, is to initiate an investigation to determine the existence or non-existence of these criminal structures,” he added, according to the digital newspaper, La Página.

Funes informed that he had asked his foreign minister, Hugo Martínez, to “ask the Venezuelan foreign ministry and intelligence services to pass on all the information brought forward by President Maduro when he made this statement.”

“Maduro strikes me as a serious person, and for that reason, not one to make a denunciation just for the sake of doing so,” said the president, and added that the denunciations are related to an important Salvadoran deputy, Roberto D’Aubuisson.

“Son of the founder of the ARENA party (Roberto D’Aubuisson Arrieta), who, in the past, was involved with death squads and the assassination of Oscar Arnulfo Romero. The son of the deputy D’Aubuisson was killed in Guatemala by assassins linked to narcotrafficking,” said the president.

Funes also announced that he had instructed the National Civil Police (PNC) to start an official investigation, “so that if we have to go to court with it, we will,” he said.

Funes recognized that El Salvador has a past history of involvement “in this type of terrorist actions”, such as those in which Luis Posada Carriles took part, one of those denounced by Venezuela.

Funes also recalled that there had been plans to assassinate Fidel Castro, then president of Cuba, in Panama during the Ibero-American Summit of 2000, by a terrorist group commanded by Posada Carriles.

“Where did Posada Carriles depart from? From here, in El Salvador. Who provided him with an identification card and a passport so he could travel as a Salvadoran? Authorities and functionaries of the ARENA party, which ruled this country at the time,” Funes said.

“How did Posada Carriles get around here? With vehicles and safe houses provided by ARENA, at the time that ARENA ruled here, during the reign of former president Francisco Flores,” Funes added. “Therefore, with those antecedents, we have something to investigate.”

Funes says that the least that could be done responsibly “if those groups have operated in the past with the intent of sabotaging the internal processes of Cuba, and if they also tried in the past to assassinate the president of Cuba, if there are Salvadoran prisoners in Cuba for placing explosive charges in hotels.”

Funes said that another Salvadoran, Francisco Chávez Abarca, was arrested in Venezuela when he was identified for trying to provoke an attempt on the life of president Hugo Chávez.

Translation mine.

El Salvador has a lot of reckoning yet to be done, clearly, for its right-wing death-squad past. Funes’s own party was one of the squads’ targets back then, so it stands to reason that there is no love lost between him and ARENA. And the D’Aubuisson family, too, remains a regional threat, as active meddlers in foreign politics.

As for Luis Posada Carriles, he’s still living illegally in Florida, totally untouched and totally in the face of local authorities. Whereas any other Latin American coming in illegally would have faced prompt deportation, the right-wing ex-Cuban Posada is being mollycoddled something shameful. And I don’t think it’s because he’s an old man and frail, either. He’s well enough to parade the streets in broad daylight whenever there’s an anti-Castro march or demonstration going on. He’s not the least bit afraid to show his blotchy, pitted face, because he knows the authorities won’t touch an old CIA asset, no matter how big an embarrassment he gets to be.

Or, in the case of his latest attempt on the life of a Venezuelan leader friendly with the Brothers Castro, an ongoing diplomatic liability and a threat to hemispheric public safety.
